| Disc Pathology- What's Wrong? The human spine is a miracle of natural engineering. The spine is made up of stacking vertebral bones with soft cushions between them called discs that act like shock absorbers. Each disc has a leathery outer layer called the Annulus, which contains a jelly called the Nucleus Pulposis. The postural habits of living in our society dictate that we will maintain constant pressure on the discs of our spine causing them to become dehydrated, weaker and ineffective resulting in Osteoarthritis or Degenerative Disc Disease. Once the outer layer of disc becomes weaker, the inner jelly begins to bulge out, thus irritating the nearby nerves. Damaged discs seldom heal as they remain under pressure and have little or no blood supply to feed and hydrate them. Reducing pressure inside the disc and creating better motion of the spinal joints will increase fluid exchange to the Annulus and Nucleus Pulposis to provide nutrients and facilitate healing. |
